Market Overview
Portable Applications to Spur Growth in the Renewable Chargers Market in Europe
Portable technology such as such as mobile phones, laptops, global positioning systems (GPS), e-readers and gaming devices have been in common use over the last two decades. Most of these devices are powered by rechargeable batteries and require frequent charging, highlighting the need for a continuous source of power. A green battery charger that uses solar or wind energy provides the user with inexhaustible clean power on demand as well as mobility, paving the way for lucrative market opportunities in the European renewable chargers market. 'The future of on-demand, clean and inexhaustible power lies in the development of renewable chargers,' notes the analyst of this research. 'With the influx of personal electronics and portable applications along with the growing emphasis of environmentally friendly technology, green chargers are likely to be a stepping stone towards the envisioned future.' The market for renewable chargers primarily depends on the portable applications. Other applications such as automotive and industrial are set to follow suit by 2020. The technology is still in its infancy and mass commercialisation is expected by 2012.
However, a major challenge faced by the renewable charger industry is the inability to meet the efficiency of a conventional charger. The renewable charger is moderately efficient with low power output and at present, can be used only for portable applications, thereby limiting the manufactures’ scope in the market. 'A steep upfront cost and efficiency at the consumer level presents major challenges to this nascent market,' explains the analyst. 'The demand is elastic; consumers contemplate about investing when there are inexpensive alternatives.'
The cost of manufacturing for an emerging market is bound to be higher until the economies of scale come into play. Companies should ensure that the prices and competence are at par with the conventional chargers to garner a substantial share in the market. 'Aggressive promotion campaigns will also help the manufacturers’ establish a considerable amount of visibility for their product and therefore garner a significant market share for themselves,' concludes the analyst.
