The Concrete Mix, Pump and Volumetric Truck Industry in North America 2009
SpecialtyTransportation.net, May 2010, Pages: 52
The Concrete Mix, Pump and Volumetric Truck Industry in North America 2009: Size, segmentation, competition, growth and trends underlying the manufacture and market of concrete mixer, pump and volumetric mixers in North America
The delivery and placement of concrete with over-the-road vehicles is accomplished by three types of vehicles—concrete mix trucks, concrete pump trucks and volumetric mixers.
While delivery/placement is the common theme for all three, each area is populated by different manufacturers, with almost no one carrying a full line in the North American market. This is in sharp contrast to Europe, where the major players are more likely to be diversified across all types of vehicles. Just four manufacturers offer products in more than one category, with the common combination being rear discharge and front discharge concrete mixers.
Much has changed in this industry since SVN brought out the 2006 edition of this report. The industry has been in turmoil, and though it is well established that this is a notoriously cyclical industry, prone to booms and busts, the extent of shrinkage in market size this time around has taken everyone by surprise.
Stalwarts have fallen by the wayside; these were manufacturers who had turned away orders in 2006, when their factories were running at full capacity. The industry has suffered not only on account of the downturn in construction activity, which set in from the time housing activity began to decline, but also because of cutbacks in lending by banks.
SVN estimates indicate that the overall market, all four categories together, is down over 60% from 2006, the year at which the market was at its peak. The prognosis going forward does not look very optimistic either. In the short term, the industry is expected to be flat in 2010. This can be interpreted as good news, given the fact that brakes have been applied on the rapid tumble downhill. 2011 is the first year in which some growth is expected to return to this industry, but it is unlikely that the market will return to the size it was in 2006, even in a three- to five-year timeframe.
There have been closures, bankruptcy filings, acquisitions, and consolidations, as well as, surprisingly, new entrants into the industry. Not surprisingly, China is increasing its presence in the North American concrete delivery and placement space. Chinese manufacturers have worked on upgrading their products to meet American standards, and the industry is beginning to acknowledge this fact.
The report can be put to immediate use for sales and market planning, M&A identification, competitive share analysis, alliances and technology transfer considerations.
