Summary
The US Gulf of Mexico (GOM) deep water and ultra deep water region offers immense potential for future oil and gas production along with a stable political environment. The undiscovered oil and gas potential in the US GOM is large. During the 1990s, there was a decrease in GOM production resulting in a decline in activity in the oil and gas market in the region. However, the recent discoveries in the deep and ultra deep lower tertiary plays of the US GOM have attracted new investments to the region. In recent years, there has been increased activity in the region for tapping its vast potential resources. However, advanced technologies are needed to overcome the risks involved in extracting oil and gas from the ultra deep water area of the Lower Tertiary plays. Nonetheless, increased investments with positive results are likely to pave the way for a revival in oil and gas production from the US GOM region.
