Is Clean Coal a Reality: Green Edging through Carbon Capture and Storage

Summary

In response to the growing concern about climate change and rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, considerable investment is going into looking for ways of continuing to burn coal, while reducing the atmospheric emissions of carbon and other pollutants. New clean coal technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) are expected to help contain the emissions, facilitating the use of coal in an environmentally satisfactory and economically viable manner as interim solutions to climate change.

While the available potential for CCS in the power industry is high, the adoption of CCS is plagued by various concerns surrounding the technology. Nevertheless, the future for CCS in utilities looks promising. Although end-user concerns regarding the Emission Trading System (ETS) and high costs are expected to hamper the commercial adoption of CCS in the near future, advanced research programs to develop new materials and the reformed ETS are going to address these issues. In addition, several collaborations and partnerships between governments, the power sector and research bodies have been actively pursuing innovative technological developments in carbon capture. The increasing success stories of smooth CCS integration and functioning are likely to reduce technological bottlenecks and raise the level of adoption.
