Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) and Alcatel-Lucent retained the top-three positions in the SDP market, but their revenue grew more slowly than the overall market. Most of the growth came from product-related services. Oracle’s revenue grew very rapidly. It gained market share, mainly from growth in its product-related services business from a low base. Huawei also gained market share, thanks to rapid growth in the number of subscribers in its target markets and continuing geographic expansion. Comverse maintained its market position, registering growth in its real-time charging business in developed and emerging markets. Among the other significant vendors, Telcordia achieved the fastest revenue growth. It benefited from the rapid growth in subscriber numbers in its installed base in India.

The economic downturn restricted CSP spending generally, but the SDP segment managed a healthy 9% growth in comparison with 2008. This was much lower than the dramatic growth achieved in the previous three years, but meant that most vendors did better than they had expected at the start of the year. Most of the revenue growth came from product-related professional services rather than licences and maintenance. Growth in the number of subscribers in emerging markets continued to have a positive impact on vendor revenue. This trend particularly affected CSP spending on real-time charging solutions.

Competitive pressures in developed and emerging markets stimulated CSP spending on new services. This benefited vendors in all SDP sub-segments, but spending on mobile content management and delivery, as well as telecoms application servers, was most-directly affected. Growth in mobile data services drove spending on real-time charging, and mobile content management and delivery, to support CSPs in extracting revenue from mobile broadband services. CSP investments in new business models that are built around the ecosystems of third-party developers and service providers drove spending on mobile content management and delivery to support carrier application stores, and on telecoms application servers to support service exposure. The limitations of legacy platforms drove spending in telecoms application servers and real-time charging, as CSPs replaced legacy systems or supplemented them with next-generation platforms to support IP-based services and protocols.

This report provides detailed market share data for four market sub-segments: telecoms application servers, mobile content management and delivery, mobile device management and real-time charging. It identifies the leading vendors and their market shares in each category. Vendors with a diversified portfolio of products appear in multiple categories.
