Social Computing and Compliance
Nemertes Research, June 2010, Pages: 12
Thanks to the rapid growth of Web sites such as Facebook and Twitter, social computing has entered the enterprise lexicon quickly as business and IT managers seek to leverage the power of social applications to improve communications and collaboration both internally and externally. Though social computing can complement unified communications, it also can create potential challenges with respect to compliance and security. As social-computing adoption grows, IT and line-of-business managers must leverage 'the wisdom of the crowds' to improve collaboration, while also meeting compliance and e-discovery requirements.
The Issue: Roadblocks on the Way to Social Computing Opportunity
In the last few years, social computing has come to dominate the Internet. Consumer sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and YouTube quickly have become among the most popular destinations for Web surfers looking to engage in conversation, connect with friends, and find communities of interest. More recently, business and IT managers have begun to explore the potential of social computing to solve enterprise communication and collaboration challenges, especially as an increasingly virtual workforce offers reduced opportunities for inperson interaction. In addition to work-related collaboration, many managers look to social networking to bridge the geographical divide of workers, in effect establishing an online “water cooler” for non-work-related conversations to build interpersonal relationships.
But the enterprise world differs significantly from the consumer space. Enterprise business and IT managers must meet business, regulatory and legislative requirements to preserve and protect data, secure communications, and create a verifiable means to ensure identity of conversation participants. Fortunately new applications and approaches are arising to enable companies to leverage social computing in accordance with compliance and security requirements.
