SaaS (Software as a Service) is an on-demand application or software deployment model where user can license access of an applications as service. The software applications can be accessed from the Internet through standard web browser and be deployed as a hosted service. The software or application runs on the web servers of the service provider.
SaaS is increasingly becoming popular as the deployment its becoming simplified, which further reduces the cost of acquiring customers. Moreover, the service providers are able to support a large number of customers with a single version of a product. Most of the times, the SaaS is offered through business model that is based on the pay-as-you-go method where customers subscribe applications instead of purchasing them. Thus, the model provides flexibility at a low-cost which enables customers to focus more on their core business. It also eliminates the need for time consuming software patches and updates.
The SaaS model provides a lower cost of ownership as compared to the conventional on-premise enterprise software delivery model. Moreover, the global economic slowdown has created an opportunity for the growth of SaaS. The credit crunch enterprises and small & medium companies are opting SaaS model as an cost effective alternative by making installment based payments.
The tough economic conditions have resulted in the growth of the SaaS market which provides option of accessing a software as a service instead of implementing the software. Thus, the companies adopting new technologies to differentiate themselves can substancially reduce cost through adoption of software by SaaS model. The execution of SaaS approach in the product portfolio is done either through direct selling of independent SaaS applications or through providing on-demand applications as extensions of Business Suite. For example, SAP has acquired Frictionless Commerce, Clear Standards and SkyData Systems to offer their on-demand software services, while Salesforce.com, Citrix Online, etc are independent SaaS application providers.
