Electronic Design Automation (EDA) applications are used to design and develop electronic systems such as printed circuit boards (PCBs) and integrated circuits (ICs). For implementation of EDA applications, a computer is used to design, lay out, verify and simulate the performance of electronic circuits on a chip or printed circuit board . Moreover, EDA application for IC design incorporates modular, digital flows, and encompasses the logic & circuit design methods required by miniaturized electronic components.
Over the previous decade, the EDA applications market has seen a consistent year-on-year growth; and despite the recession, the investments continued till early 2008. Further, a slowdown in investments in the last quarter of 2008 and in 2009 was observed due to the prevailing global economic conditions. As a result, many customers have reduced, deferred or canceled their investments in the EDA applications. In addition, they have also reduced or terminated the on-going paid maintenance for their installed base, which negatively impacted the companies’ recurring revenue. However, a rapid recovery in the EDA applications' market is expected during 2010, as the companies are likely to recover from the recession and invest in solutions that will provide them a sustainable business advantage and profitability.
Many of the EDA companies are acquiring small companies with software or other technology that can be adapted to their core business. Most of these companies are rather incestuous amalgamations of many smaller companies. Further, this trend is helped by the tendency of software companies to design tools as accessories that fit naturally into a larger vendor's suite of programs (many new tools incorporate analog design, and mixed systems on digital circuitry). This is basically driven by the trend to place anthe entire electronic systems on a single chip. For example, Cadence Design Systems acquired ChipEstimate, a developer of IC planning and IP reuse management tools; Clearshape, a developer of Design for Manufacturability (DFM) technology etc. to increase its product portfolio.
