An Application Delivery Controller (ADC) is a device that is placed between the firewall and one or more application servers in a Data Center. Besides providing traditional load balancing across servers,  ADC provides a gamut of acceleration and optimization functions (such as SSL Acceleration, TCP Optimization, Web compression, Traffic Management)
The growing economic activity, coupled with technological evolution is driving the demand for the next generation Data Centers. Moreover, technological innovation has led to virtualization in Data Centers. With the increase in the number of Web applications and the growing complexity in Data Centers, the demand for efficient and advanced ADC has grown rapidly. Today, the organizations are looking for next generation ADCs that can perform multiple functions. As a result, this has led to the emergence of Application Delivery Networking in Data Centers. For instance, the advent of virtualized Chassis-Based Application Delivery Controllers is not only leading to better performance, but is also contributing towards lower energy consumption at Data Centers.
Application Delivery Networking is a suite of technologies that are deployed together to provide application security and acceleration, and network availability. Thus, ADCs are at the core of Application Delivery Networking. Traditionally, different functions have been performed by the server or the application, or by point solutions running on separate devices. With the multifold increase in the number of servers and applications, usage of point solutions from different vendors have led to interoperability and device management issues. This is leading to the wide adoption of Application Delivery Networking, especially in large organizations. In addition to performing basic function like load balancing; Application Delivery Networking encompasses a number of functions (such as SSL Acceleration, TCP Optimization, and WAN Optimization).
The report by TechNavio Insights forecasts the size of the Application Delivery Controllers market in Datacenters over the period 2009-2013. Further, it discusses the key market trends, drivers and challenges of Application Delivery Controllers market in Datacenters, and profiles some of the key vendors of this market.
