A Geographic Information System (GIS) (also called Spatial Information Management) is a collection of software and geographic data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. In a more generic sense, GIS is a tool that allows users to create interactive queries (user-created searches), analyze the spatial information, edit data & maps, and present the results of all these operations.
With the rapid development in technology, GIS is increasingly being integrated into different projects in Utilities. Currently, governments and Utilities, around the world, are incorporating GIS into different phases of infrastructure life-cycle such as surveying, planning, designing, constructing, and the maintenance process. Further, instead of using GIS as a stand-alone system, Utilities are integrating it into their existing IT infrastructure. This is helping them increase their efficiency and make better decisions. Moreover, along with its traditional usage in Utilities, GIS is now being used in advanced areas (such as Smart Grid, Vegetation Management, and Renewable Energy Management). However, certain factors like database integration and lack of digital infrastructure at smaller firms are inhibiting the growth of GIS in Utilities. These issues need to be addressed to keep this industry in a high growth trajectory.

GIS, due to its accuracy and reliability, has become a core element for the efficient execution of many Utility projects. GIS based tools are being used for quantitative analysis and simulation to model, measure, and visualize issues.

The report forecasts the size of GIS in the Utilities market, over the period 2009-2013. It segments the market into three geographic regions: Americas, EMEA and APAC; representing the market size and forecast for each of these regions. Further, it discusses the key market trends, drivers and challenges of GIS in the Utilities market, and profiles some of the key vendors of this market.
