File virtualization is the creation of an abstraction layer between the file servers and the clients who access such servers. Once deployed, the file virtualization layer manages files and file systems across servers, allowing administrators to present clients with one logical file mount for all servers. The file servers continue to host file data and metadata. File virtualization may be deployed as an appliance or as an off-the-shelf server running file virtualization software.
In the current scenario, file virtualization is being implemented in servers; in hybrid offerings that include server-based codes and devices; and in separate applications and hardwares. Certain organizations have multiple file servers, and file virtualization organizes them into a coherent whole. It allows greater level of flexibility for the storage managers. Further, it increases data mobility by providing location independence of file systems and files from the applications and users that utilize them.
Recently, the file virtualization market has witnessed increasing number of mergers and acquisitions. Cisco Systems acquired Neopath Networks in early 2007; EMC acquired Rainfinity; Brocade bought NuView Systems; and F5 took over Acopia Networks.
