A Data Center, also called a server farm, is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as network equipment and storage systems. It also includes supporting equipment, such as backup power supplies, data communications connections, environmental controls (e.g., air conditioning, fire suppression), rack infrastructure for collocation, and security devices. A Power Distribution Unit (PDU) is an electrical device used to control the distribution of power to individual loads. The PDU may be a stand-alone controlled device or it may be integrated directly into the uninterruptible power supply (UPS).
The PDU market has undergone a rapid transformation in the last few years. Today, in addition to providing the basic functions (such as power distribution to multiple outlets), PDUs are providing remote power management as well as outlet level power monitoring functionality. Further, the dramatic increase in energy cost at Data Centers, deficit in power production, and the focus on climate change and carbon emission are certain factors that are propelling the growth of this market. Despite this healthy growth, issues such as region specific power specification and lack of awareness about the innovative functionalities provided by the new PDUs are hindering the growth of this market.
With the increase in the number of electronic installations, certain Data Center operators have been using redundant power feeds to run mission-critical applications. Such Data Centers need to ensure that the load is properly balanced between the power feeds. In order to achieve this, the Data Center operators are using Metered PDUs that provide the necessary data to properly load and balance rack power circuits. In addition to the functionality offered by a basic PDU, a metered PDU offers the ability to monitor the total amount of current that flows through the PDU. This provides network managers the ability to know when the electricity demands of connected equipment approach or exceed the total capacity of the PDU or the UPS power source. This helps them in making the necessary upgrades before power failure occurs.
Data Centers consume a huge amount of energy. According to a study conducted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), servers and Data Centers consumed 61 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy in 2006. It was 1.5 percent of the total electricity consumption in the US that year; worth $4.5 billion. Moreover, the EPA forecasts that by 2011, this segment is likely to consume more than 100 billion kWh electricity. Further, as enterprise Data Centers are growing, the energy cost associated with these are affecting the profitability of the companies. Additionally, the unavailability of power for general household usage is prompting the law makers to put pressure on commercial organizations to reduce their power consumption. This is compelling Data Center operators to adopt equipment that can provide efficient power distribution and monitor the power consumption at equipment and outlet level. This is driving the PDU market in Data Centers.
This report by TechNavio Insights highlights the current and future market potential of the Power Distribution Unit market in Data Centers. Further it discusses trends, drivers, growth inhibitors. It also profiles a few major vendors in the market.
