Data deduplication is a method of reducing storage needs, by eliminating the redundant or duplicate data. In this, only a unique instance of the data is retained on storage media, such as disk or tape. The redundant data, on the other hand, is replaced with a 'pointer' to the unique data copy. Backup applications benefit the most from Data deduplication, since they are involved in repeated full backups of an existing file system. The Data Deduplication market has been rapidly growing. It had performed better than other data storage and archiving segments during the economics crisis. However, this market is estimated to grow at a slower rate in the future, as enterprise IT organizations may have restraints on IT budgets and expenditure.
Deduplicating data at the source or the client server from where the application is hosted is a growing trend in this industry. For instance, NetBackup's PureDisk has the option of deduplication at the source level. It helps in optimizing the network usage, and reduced network traffic between the client and backup server. However, vendors like CA offer data duplication at the backup server level. This results in reduced network traffic between the backup server and target, but not between the actual client and the backup server.

The major issues faced by organizations with their current backup and recovery solutions include long backup and recovery times, higher manual intervention, difficulty in measuring backup success, and media management. In any organization, up to 80 percent of the data is unstructured. The backup administrators are unable to keep up with the rapid data growth, due the above issues. Data Deduplication addresses such issues, as only unique instance data is stored, and the existing duplicate data is referenced. Further, when a data object expires or is overwritten, such references are removed. Thus, the free space is reclaimed and reused.
