Global High-Availability Clustering Software Market 2009-2013

Infiniti Research Limited, April 2010, Pages: 21

A Cluster is a group of linked computers that work together, resembling a single computer. They are deployed to improve performance and availability of systems. High-availability (HA) Clusters are computer clusters that are implemented to provide high availability of services. They operate through redundant computers and nodes when system components fail. In case of a server crash, a HA Cluster detects the hardware/software faults, and promptly restarts the application on another system without any administrative intervention.

Downtime (whether planned or unplanned) is an important factor to be considered for any organization. Unplanned downtime is mainly caused by power & network outages, and hardware & application failures. High-availability Clustering software helps companies reduce downtime by restarting the applications on alternate resources. Apart from this, there are many factors (such as disaster recovery, web based applications, increasing data usage, etc) that are driving the High-availability Clustering software market.

An emerging trend in High-availability Clustering software market is the shift towards Linux based systems from the Unix based systems. Linux is an open source and free operating system, with features of graphical user interface (GUI), drivers, etc. Linux also supports multiple file systems on which the organizations work. The stability and cost-effectiveness of Linux has led organizations to shift from Unix to Linux. Further, the vendors also have reported a significant growth in Linux based High-availability solutions as compared to Unix based High-availability solutions.
Organizations witness constant rise and fall in the demand of computing resources. Such variations in demand is caused by deployment of different applications and processes. As the demand for computing resources increase, the existing capacity must be restructured or additional capacity must be added. Further, as the demand decreases, the tasks can be shifted or migrated to allocate the online servers for other processes, or take it offline for upgrades and maintenance. High availability servers are able to address both scenarios, i.e adding/removing or restructuring servers, for on-going cost-effective operations. This ensures smooth functionality of the servers and quicker response times to user requests.
