Market Overview
Outlook for 3T MRI and 64-Slice CT Segments Positive Despite Lackluster Prospects for the Overall U.S. MRI and CT Scanners Markets
Over the last few years, the economic recession and changes in the healthcare policy have been responsible for the diminishing size of the U.S. MRI and CT scanners markets. This trend will continue for the next few years. The most influential factor uplifting prospects for the U.S. MRI scanners markets is the introduction of new technologies, which are overcoming the previous technical pitfalls in 3T imaging. Moreover, there is a need for replacement of a large installed base of 64-slice scanners in the markets. 'Leading manufacturers in MRI have begun introducing solutions which overcome the negative effects of dielectric shading and the higher specific absorption rate (SAR) levels that are induced when imaging at a magnetic field strength of 3 Tesla,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'As these new technologies begin to gain traction among end-users in the market, they will help significantly in pushing uptake of 3-Tesla scanners in MRI.' The more than 1,200 64-slice scanners that were shipped between 2004 and 2006 have started to reach the end of the average replacement cycle of CT scanners. As capital starts to become more freely available again, the replacement of these scanners will help to stem CT unit shipment declines.
Recession induced difficulties and procedure reimbursement rate cuts for many providers of advanced imaging services scheduled to take effect in January 2011 have reined in market progression. These rate cuts are expected to lower the demand for premium CT scanner technology and contribute largely to the downsizing in the number of facilities performing MRI. Moreover, with many provider facilities still struggling to overcome the negative effects of rate cuts imposed by the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA) of 2005, further rate reductions are expected to lead to greater consolidation of advanced imaging facilities.
Effective January 2011, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) assumed utilization rate of imaging equipment costing over $1 million will increase from 50 to 75 percent, as mandated by the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 passed on March 30th. With reports of actual utilization rates being as low as 54 percent, the considerable gap between the new mandated assumption and providers’ actual usage of imaging equipment is most likely to result in substantial reductions in provider reimbursement rates. 'There is little that MRI manufacturers can do to avoid the negative effects of CMS’s increasing assumed equipment utilization rate in 2011,' says the analyst. 'MRI will become even more a luxury modality than it already is, likely resulting in additional contraction of the market’s size.' In spite of this, the scope of applications in which MRI is being used continues to widen, and manufacturers are encouraged to continue developing new technologies that promote cost and workflow efficiency while maintaining high image quality and broad application coverage. Manufacturers of CT systems should focus marketing efforts on mid-tier (i.e., 64-slice) scanners, while continuing to dedicate most of their research and development activities toward new premium scanner technologies such as dual-source, dual-energy, and dynamic volume scanning.
