This study discusses the world magnetic sensors markets. Sensors are defined as sensing elements and any other electronics or modules or sub-systems have not been calculated in the evaluation of this market. Research findings show that the penetration of magnetic sensors in cell phones and other consumer electronic applications is increasing, while automotive continues to be a major end-user market for magnetic sensors. Hall IC, Magneto Resistive (AMR and GMR) sensors and Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (low and high temperature SQUID) are the types of magnetic sensors covered in this research service.

This Frost & Sullivan research service titled World Magnetic Sensors Markets provides analysis on different magnetic sensor types. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following markets: Hall integrated circuits (ICs), magnetoresistive (MR) {anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) and giant magnetoresistive (GMR)}, and superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). The applications covered include communications, computers and consumer electronics, automotive, industrial, medical, and research and development.

Consumer Electronic Applications Find it Hard to Resist the Pull of Magnetic Sensors

Cell phones and other consumer electronic applications such as dishwashers and cell phones are proving high-volume markets for magnetic sensors. Cell phones that unlock automatically (automatic wake up) use Hall ICs, as do clamshell slide opening or swivel opening cell phones that switch on as soon as the user flips or slides them open. In addition, magnetic sensors are experiencing considerable demand from the PC and healthcare industries and are emerging an important sensing component in cars and other automobiles. 'Automotive has historically been one of the most important markets for magnetic sensors, and it continues to be so,' says the analyst of this research. 'The sensors are used in engine, transmission, emission, suspension, steering cooling, doors, and windows and many other automotive applications.'

Despite the emerging applications of magnetic sensors, new technologies such as AMR have not been able to make a huge impression on the revenue shares due to end users' reluctance to accept them. While end-user education can remedy this issue, manufacturers in this highly competitive market will have to pull out all stops to fight off the competition from low-cost imports and inexpensive imitations from Asia. However, some magnetic sensors such as Hall ICs form part of a densely populated, high-volume, and low-cost segment. Besides, device manufacturers normally pass down the price pressure on to component manufacturers. 'Sensor manufacturers are expected to overcome these price pressures by adding more features or increasing functionalities,' notes the analyst. 'This will enable them to differentiate their products, while selling them at the same price points instead of lowering them.'

Market Sectors

Expert Frost & Sullivan analysts thoroughly examine the following market sectors in this research:

- Hall integrated circuits (ICs)

- Magnetoresistive (MR)

-- Anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR)
-- Giant magnetoresistive(GMR)

- Superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs)
