This Frost & Sullivan research service titled 2010 U.S. Ophthalmologists’ Assessment of Eye Care Medication Brands provides a snapshot of opportunities, trends, and estimates in the market. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following: patient compliance with eye care medication instructions, factors impacting prescriptions for eye care medications, and preferences for eye disease medications including glaucoma medications.

Market Overview

U.S. Ophthalmic Pharmaceuticals Market Faces Significant Unmet Medical Needs among Expanding Older Population

The U.S. ophthalmic pharmaceuticals market including glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), chronic dry eye, allergic conjunctivitis, and ocular non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for post-cataract and refractive surgery, represent key markets with significant unmet medical needs. This is particularly so among the growing aging population. Most ophthalmologists rate patient compliance with eye care medication instructions as 'good' to an extent. However, patient compliance does vary with the condition being treated. Specifically, ophthalmologists cite 'forgetfulness' as the leading contributor to non-compliance among patients being treated for glaucoma. Medication cost is the major reason for non-compliance among patients being treated for age-related macular degeneration and allergic conjunctivitis. 'When ophthalmologists are considering which eye care medications to prescribe, efficacy of a particular medication is typically at the forefront of their minds,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'However, an ophthalmologists’ past experience with a particular medication is also a strong contributor.'

Overall, ophthalmologists are 'loyal' to the eye care medications they primarily prescribe. More specifically, they tend to rank the brands they often prescribe as the top-notch brands; however, there is an exception to this trend. For patients using NSAIDs, more ophthalmologists primarily prescribe Acular LS from Allergan, yet a larger proportion rank Xibrom from ISTA Pharmaceuticals as the top brand.

This research service encompasses feedback provided by U.S. physicians on aspects of ophthalmology drug treatment, enabling interested stakeholders to gain an insight into the current and future trends. Frost & Sullivan conducted a Web-based survey of 152 U.S. ophthalmologists in November 2009. Of these respondents, 48 percent were in single-specialty group practice, 38 percent were in solo practice, and the rest were in multi-specialty group practice or in hospital-based clinics. The study measures brand perceptions of selected products used by ophthalmologists. It also investigates the importance of product features and their relationship to product purchase preferences. Apart from this it determines if ophthalmologists in different basic demographics have different opinions of products and feature importance. The respondents were queried about factors affecting the prescription of eye-care medications, the brands that they patronize, patient compliance with the instructions given to them for taking medications, and the number of medications taken by patients. Respondents were asked to provide their comments on specific brands.
