In June of 2010, HP introduced an architecture optimized to support Business Service Management (BSM) from an operations-centric perspective. The announcement centers in a service model with “run-time” currency, a Run-Time Operational Database, and a number of product-specific enhancements to core product areas primarily in infrastructure and applications management.

To describe the announcement as “revolutionary” probably does HP a disservice, since it suggests advanced changes that are more avant-garde than pragmatic and dependable. And while HP’s BSM innovations in 9.0 are revolutionary from an industry perspective, they in fact reflect ongoing development initiatives towards “model-based automation,” and transitions to CMDB and CMS federation, as well as investments in dashboarding and analytics that have, for the most part, been ongoing for more than four years. Moreover, HP’s innovations reflect broader trends across the management industry that, as they play out over time, are among the most promising that this analyst has seen in at least half a decade.

HP’s “run-time” focus is partly directed at the unique requirements of virtualized infrastructures and Cloud computing, which are highly dynamic in nature and hence need information that’s current whenever changes occur. This more operational run-time focus is also suited to monitoring and optimizing application service performance whenever conditions or critical KPI’s shift.

This EMA Impact Brief focuses on the architectural and functional highlights of HP’s BSM 9.0 announcement and places them in industry context.
