Chips and Salsa XII – A Chip of a Different Color (Mobile WiMAX Chipset Performance Benchmark Results)
Signals Research Group, LLC, June 2010
In this issue of Signals Ahead the publisher continues the long-standing tradition of providing performance benchmark results for leading chipsets. For this round of testing the publisher collaborated with Agilent Technologies to look at the performance characteristics of Mobile WiMAX chipsets – a chip of a different color. Specific topics covered in the issue include the following:
The Solutions. The publisher tested five chipsets, including solutions from Beceem, GCT, Intel, MediaTek and Sequans. While other companies, who were also invited to participate, may claim to have a commercially-viable chipset, the publisher only know for certain that these five companies can make the claim.
The Test Methodology. The publisher collaborated with Agilent Technology engineers who provided us with engineering support and use of the Agilent E6651A Mobile WiMAX Test Set and PXB Channel Emulator. All testing took place at Agilent’s facilities in Scotland over the last several months.
The Tests. In this round of testing the publisher focused primarily on receiver sensitivity and transmitter accuracy. Tests included “Receive CINR Sweep without Fading,” “Receiver Testing without Fading,” “Transmit Power and Modulation Accuracy,” and “Receive Power Sweep with PB3 Fading Conditions.”
The Results. All chipsets performed well but under more challenging network conditions, such as with low receiver power with or without fading, the publisher observed measurable performance differences that could equate to 2x difference in end-user throughput.
