‘Captive Power Plants in India: Harnessing its Potential’ has been prepared to fulfill the long standing need of power sector professionals by providing them with quality information and analytics. We believe that we truly owe this report to the Energy Industry.

The idea of preparing the report was first mooted way back in the summer of 2009 when India was facing severe power crisis and short term prices were hovering above Rs 10 per unit. It was widely felt that India could have utilized the surplus capacity available with captive power plants (CPPs) across the country but failed to capitalize on the assets due to policy limitations and state government hindrances. The large untapped installed capacity of captive power has high potential to ease the power situation of the country if harnessed in a better manner by providing an enabling policy environment.

To understand the extent to which CPPs can contribute to bridge the demand-supply gap, the authors instituted an expert team which spent dedicated effort of more than eight months to come out with this unique effort which covers all the facets of captive power including regulatory/policy hurdles and sizing the resultant new opportunities following the paradigm shift post enactment and implementation of the Electricity Act, 2003.

Besides the analysis part, this report provides accurate and up to date information, through a painstaking process of putting together various unstructured knowledgebases at one place and combining exhaustive primary surveys and the secondary data. Valuable suggestions, observations and comments rendered by many industry professionals have gone into the making of this Compendium as a source of ready reference for Power Sector professionals and organizations.
