Thermal Power has always been the main source of electricity generation in India and will continue to remain the linchpin of the Indian power sector for at least the next few decades, given the large domestic coal resources and the absence of any other significant domestic energy sources in the country. Thermal power will, thus, help increase the availability of electricity which is an urgent development priority for the country.
The present total installed capacity of India is 1,47,457 MW (as in January 2009, of which 63.3% is thermal, 24.9% hydel, 2.8% nuclear and 9% renewable. Capacity addition target during XI Plan is 78700 MW of which more than 75% is to be contributed by thermal power. Out of this 75% (>59000 MW), only 14% (8439 MW) has been commissioned as of January 31, 2009. Of the 8439 MW commissioned capacity, private sector contribution has been 1000 MW, while central and state sector added 2740 MW and 4699 MW, respectively.
It is interesting to note here that private sector constitutes more than 40% (~28000 MW) of the total thermal power capacity under construction, for benefits during the rest of the XI Plan and beyond, in various states of the country. Both the central and the state sector share the balance under construction thermal capacity in almost equal proportions, i.e. about 30%. The Western region accounts for 42% of the total thermal capacity under construction followed by northern, eastern and southern and north-eastern regions with 22%, 20%, 15% and 1% respectively. gives a detailed dissection of the state-wise and sector-wise under construction thermal capacity in India.
