Bahrain Telecommunications Report Q3 2010
Business Monitor International, June 2010, Pages: 90
The Bahrain Telecommunications Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, telecommunication associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Bahrain's telecommunications industry.
As the analyst comes to update the Q210 Bahrain Telecommunications report, no new data is as yet available on the state of the telecoms market at the end of 2009. Year-end results often take longer to publish than quarterly updates, so we do not at present have any new statistical information about the mobile, fixedline and broadband markets.
We will have to wait until the Q310 to be able to analyse, not only the final year 2009 results, but also the results to the end of March 2010. These results in particular BMI will wait for with great anticipation, as they will show the first effects of the introduction of a new operator. The Saudi Telecom Company (STC)’s VIVA network launched a number-booking campaign in early February 2010, readying a rapid launch. To help encourage new sign ups, the operator is offering free mobile broadband to those who prebook a number on the network.
This is likely to lead to a spike in new subscribers in Bahrain for Q110 and Q210. It could also lead to a spike in 3G growth, which would be welcome in the market. However, fast mobile broadband will not be without its issues, because the problems that have been affecting fixed-line broadband, of insufficient international bandwidth for truly fast service, as well as legal wrangles over who has access to that bandwidth, will also have an impact on the quality of services over 3G.
By the end of September 2009, Bahrain’s mobile penetration rate had risen to 149.4%. This was up from 141.5% at the end of June. The jump in Bahrain’s mobile penetration rate reflects continued subscriber growth together with a declining population. Bahrain’s shrinking population in 2009 has been largely due to the departure of foreign workers from the Kingdom. This development has occurred in response to the economic slowdown in the country.
Bahrain has maintained its position in our Business Environment Ratings, although its score has fallen again so that it is in danger of being overtaken by Kuwait. It is Bahrain’s weakening growth that has put it in this position, as well as threats to ARPUs. It could be that the introduction of VIVA will boost its score again, but equally greater competition could push ARPUs further down, and Bahrain’s Telecoms Market score along with it.
