The 2010 Biopesticides Market in Europe & Company Index (Volume 3 of a 6 Volume Series)
CPL Scientific, Feb 2010, Pages: 291
The European market for microbial- and nematode-based pesticides is estimated to be approximately $54,485,000 at user-level; a rise of 26.7% on our estimate for 2005. The proportion of the European microbial pesticide market taken by Bacillus thuringiensis-based products has declined from an estimated 90% in 2000 to 50.6% in 2008. The largest increases since 2005 were seen in non-Bt bacteria, notably Bacillus subtilis, and in fungal-based products, including Coniothyrium minitans and Trichoderma-based products. There were also significant increases in viral sales and a steady rise in the nematode market. The largest individual European biopesticide market is Spain, followed by Italy and France. Although overall growth in the microbial biopesticide market has not lived up to the expectations of the 1990s, the potential remains high and opportunities exist which could raise the total market to $200 million by 2020.
This study covers 29 countries and focuses on the actual and potential European markets for biopesticides. In this context, we have defined a biopesticide as a pesticidal product, applied repeatedly (rather than as an introduction), the active principle of which is a micro-organism (i.e. comprising bacteria, virus, fungi or microsporidia) or a nematode. In general, such products are mass produced using fermentation technology or grown in vivo and applied using techniques similar to those used for agrochemicals. This report does not cover biochemicals, plant extracts or parasitic/predatory insects and mites.
Europe is a large, intense and diverse pesticide market valued at $12,850 million in 2008; approximately 31.7% of the world’s total. The six largest national agrochemical markets are in France, Italy, Spain, UK, Germany and Turkey. France alone accounts for 26.2% of agrochemical sales of the wider Europe, as can be seen in the figure below, with Italy taking 19.8%. The Nordic countries, on the other hand, consume comparatively small amounts; Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden combined use just 2.2% of the total.
This volume also includes an index of 314 companies, 149 tables and 60 figures.
