The “World Fibre & Brazil – Trends in Demand and Supply” is the Fifth compendium covering the trends in global demand and supply of textile fibre/filament industry.

In this Report we have assesses the impact of the Global Slowdown on textile fibre/filament industry including natural fibres, particularly cotton, and how each country performed in this scenario. The analysis assesses the positions of fibres/filaments industry as events unfolded. The evolution of Global Slowdown and its spread across the world has been critically documented in perspective of textile in-dustry. The demand crunch began in mid-2008 and continued into 2009. Also documented are the approaches of developed countries and the stimulus packages announced by various governments.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Brazil was the sixth largest producer of fibre/filament in 2008, with production at 1.50 million tons. The major component was cotton while manmade fibre/filament production totaled 310,000 tons during the year. Brazil has presence in al type of fibre/filament and globally it is the fifth largest producer of cotton, eighth in viscose staple fibre and tenth in viscose filament production. It is also the seventh largest consumers of textile fibre and also the sixth largest exporters. In consumption, Brazil ranks fifth in cotton consumption, tenth in acrylic staple consumption, eighth in nylon and polyester filament. It is a major importer of polyester filament ranking second and tenth in acrylic staple.

Production in Brazil was impressive during the 1990s with cotton production growing at 2.7% per an-num and manmade fibre/filament at a substantial rate of 17.5% a year. However, the decade of 2000 saw the growth in manmade shrink to -0.6% per annum between 2000 and 2007 while cotton output expanded 8% a year. The turmoil filled year of 2008 reversed all the positive increases to significant declines. Overall manmade fibre production was down 13% while cotton harvest shrank 26% as acreage declined 22%. Polyester filament production, the major segment of manmade fibre industry, declined 8%. Similarly, polyester staple fibre was also down 8%.Viscose staple fibre, although smaller than lost half of its production.
