This report provides an overview of the Interactive TV, IPTV, and the Electronic Program Guide markets in Australia. Interactive TV has struggled to gain widespread popularity in Australia. IPTV services are being launched by a number of ISPs, and Seven’s TiVo. However, concerns remain about the emergence of a sustainable revenue model and the current lack of unified technical platforms.
There is still confusion about the impact upon traditional broadcast revenue models. While targeted advertisements and a range of TV-based interactive services are possible, and potentially lucrative, their development is being constrained across Australia by commercialisation and regulatory problems and by consumer confusion. So far broadcasting and broadband-based video entertainment services continue to develop in parallel.
However, there are a number of applications such as Electronic Program Guides that are focussing on emancipating consumers from the constraints of traditional television viewing and broadcasting to allow them to watch what they want, when they want, and how. These include new offerings launched in mid-2010 by Telstra with its T-Box EPG and FetchTV IPTV offering through ISP iiNet aimed squarely at drawing viewers away from pay-TV companies like Foxtel and Austar.
