Tesco China 2010: A Company Profile
Access Asia Ltd, June 2010, Pages: 17
Tesco, Carrefour and Wal-Mart are the three largest retail companies in the world, yet they compete directly in very few markets, and China is one of the few that they do. It is therefore perhaps surprising that Tesco entered the market so much later than Carrefour and then Wal-Mart.
However, Tesco has now entered the Chinese market, and is growing its presence there at an aggressive pace. That pace of growth is going to accelerate as Tesco increases its number of stores, especially self-funded shopping malls and commercial complexes with itself as the anchor retailer.
In this way, Tesco is also competing as a player in the commercial real estate market in China, and not just as a retailer.
Tesco’s growth has generally been steady in China, if not as fast as its key global competitors, but Tesco look committed to a long-term strategy in China, and its significance in the market is expected to grow.
