Wal-Mart in China 2010 - A Company Profile
Access Asia Ltd, June 2010, Pages: 17
US retail giant Wal-Mart entered the China market in 1996 concentrating on the southern Chinese province of Guangdong near the Hong Kong border. Wal-Mart made the boom city of Shenzhen its first focus and has since established chain stores in cities including Dongguan, Dalian and Kunming. It is ramping up its operations in China with Supercenters, Sam's Club and Neighborhood Markets. After concentrating on the South the retailing giant is now moving into Beijing and Shanghai.
This report covers Wal-Mart's sourcing as well as retail operations in the People's republic of China.
Wal-Mart is the largest retailing company in the world by revenue. Globally, it competes directly with both the two other largest global retailers, Carrefour and Tesco, in relatively few markets, which is why the China market is a special case.
Wal-Mart entered the Chinese market later than Carrefour, which gained a significant lead against Wal-Mart by circumventing certain rules of entry at the time. Wal-Mart has been very keen to draw back the first-mover advantage, and has now overtaken Carrefour in terms of store numbers, although not revenues, largely thanks to buying local chains, especially Trust-Mart..
However, Wal-Mart continues to expand its store chain rapidly, and its revenues will likely surpass Carrefour during 2010.
