2008 U.S. Chronic Pain Drug Delivery: Patient Perspective
Frost & Sullivan, June 2010, Pages: 53
This study encompasses feedback provided by U.S. patients on aspects of drug delivery and drug treatment for chronic pain, enabling interested stakeholders to gain insight into current and future trends. Data was presented for the general objective point questions as well as analysis by disease subtype where applicable. Patient feedback about awareness, usage, and desired changes was obtained for Voltaren Gel. For device driven delivery, autoinjector technology usage and willingness for adoption is assessed by patients, as well as other vital feedback on the role the device plays in the overall drug product. The corresponding physician deliverable is titled: 2008 U.S. Chronic Pain Drug Delivery - Physician Perspective
Research Background: Drug Delivery Voice of Customer
Multiple companies involved in pharmaceutical development and delivery were interested in understanding issues and trends in drug delivery and treatment in several chronic disease areas. This was performed in Q4 2007-Jan 2008 as a multi-client project with these Key Partners, and made available in full form in January 2008.
The Objectives:
- Identify physician prescribing trends relative to drug delivery considerations - Identify physician perception of different drug delivery approaches as well as the key drivers of adoption or non-adoption - Identify drug delivery trends within specific disease areas - Determine product attributes relative to delivery that are considered important by physicians and patients - Identify prospective patient preferences and willingness to try new technologies as well as determine key drivers of adoption/non-adoption
Our Approach: Respondents were from the following disease categories: Diabetes, Chronic Pain, Inflammation (Ex: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Crohn’s Disease, Psoriasis), Neurological Disorders (Ex: Alzheimer’s disease, Schizophrenia, ADHD, Depression).
Patient and Physician respondents were in the Diabetes, Chronic Pain, and Inflammation areas. Neurological Disorders only had Physician responses.
Physician types were Primary Care Physicians, Endocrinologists, Psychiatrists, Rheumatologists, Neurologists, Physical Medicine/ Rehab, and Anesthesiologists / Pain Managers.
All respondents participated in a Web-based survey which was then analyzed through various statistical methods.
Solution/Outcome:
For the full project, all major drug delivery technology categories were assessed. Data was presented for the general objective point questions as well as analysis by disease area. In addition, patient feedback about awareness, usage and desired changes was obtained for Exubera, Byetta, Enbrel, Humira, and Voltaren Gel. Also, for device driven delivery - autoinjector technology usage and willingness for adoption is assessed by patients, as well as other vital feedback on the role the device plays in the overall drug product for both physicians and patients.
Proprietary work was analyzed and presented for the partner client assessing physician prescribing behavior and preferences specific to their needs through added proprietary questions in the questionnaire.
Research Background – 2010 Analysis
- The data and information from this project, first made available in January 2008, has now been reanalyzed in full by major disease category, re-cut and made available as shorter deliverables by disease and respondent type (physician, patient) for our subscription clients. - The patient information in this deliverable is from patients stating they had been taking medication for chronic pain regularly for the prior six months or longer. - Questions posed to patients are at the bottom of each analysis slide. - The corresponding physician deliverable is titled: '2008 U.S. Chronic Pain Drug Delivery: Physician Perspective'
