Canon Inc is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of network digital multifunction devices (MFDs), plain paper copying machines, laser printers, inkjet printers, cameras and steppers. The company also produces medical imaging and other products. Its activities are conducted through three segments:
- The Office business unit principally manufactures monochrome network digital MFDs, colour network digital MFDs, office copying machines, personal-use copying machines, full-colour copying machines, laser printers and large format inkjet printers.
- The Consumer business unit produces digital cameras and digital video cameras, as well as lenses and various other camera accessories, inkjet multifunction peripherals, single function inkjet printers, imaging scanners and broadcasting equipment.
- The Industry and Others business unit, which mainly includes semiconductor production equipment, mirror projection mask aligners for LCD panels, medical imaging equipment, magnetic heads, micromotors, computers, document scanners and personal information products, such as calculators.
This report focuses on Canon’s medical equipment business, which produces imaging equipment such as X-ray image sensors, retinal cameras, autorefractometers and image-processing equipment for computerised systems. A significant event within Canon’s medical equipment business occurred in February 2010 when the company purchased a majority interest in Optopol Technologies of Poland. The aim of this acquisition is for Canon to achieve the world's No 1 position within the overall ophthalmic diagnostic equipment segment.
