Ericsson retained its leadership position of the network management systems (NMS) market in 2009, taking a 22% share of the USD4.277 billion total revenue. The other market leaders were Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, Nokia Siemens Networks, Cisco Systems and Nortel Networks, with 18%, 17%, 14%, 7% and 5% shares, respectively. The NMS market remains highly consolidated, with the top-six NEMs accounting for 83% of the total market.

The economic downturn did have a negative impact on the NMS market. Huawei and ZTE were the only two NEMs to show year-on-year growth. As a result, Huawei moved up to third place, marginally behind Alcatel-Lucent, and NSN slipped to fourth place. The major impact from the recession was the dismantling and sale of Nortel’s CDMA/LTE, GSM and metro Ethernet businesses. However, the effects of Nortel’s break-up will only be visible in the 2010 results.

Equipment spend continues to have the greatest influence on NMS revenue. CSPs’ capex on infrastructure declined at a faster rate than anticipated in 2009, resulting in an 8% decline in the NMS market compared with our forecast decline of 4%. The recession had the greatest impact on North America and Western Europe. China's Tier-1 CSPs were the driving force behing NMS revenue in the Asia–Pacific region.

The impact of the dramatic growth in mobile data traffic was reflected in spending on mobile backhaul, transport capacity and associated NMS. Legacy spending continues to shift towards IP, supporting convergence in both backbone and access networks. Accordingly, the business services market was the only segment to register a marginal year-on-year growth.

This report provides detailed market share data on four application segments: mobile, residential broadband, business services and PSTN. It identifies the leading NEMs and their respective market shares in each category, as well as by geography. NEMs with a diversified portfolio of products will appear in multiple categories. We have included software licence and product-related services in calculating the market share positions.
