As signs of an economic recovery gradually emerge, communications service providers (CSPs) will return to investing in network management systems (NMS). Cost controls are expected to remain in place during 2010–2011, but this will generate additional cash for investment as the economic recovery strengthens. This will fuel CSP spending in a step burst.

The main drivers for revenue growth in the NMS market are the deployment of new technologies and new network roll-outs. CSPs in mature markets need to invest in new technologies to support 'richer' services, which they must offer in order to remain competitive. Regulators in growth markets are opening up their mobile markets to competition, which will result in new roll-outs and NMS deployments.

Consequently, the mobile NMS segment will lead growth in the overall NMS market, with a 6.5% CAGR. The business services NMS segment follows close behind, with a 6.2% CAGR, thanks to increasing demand for flexible, scalable backhaul solutions and IP-based networks. Residential broadband NMS is forecast to grow more slowly, at a 5.4% CAGR. However, growth in these segments is offset by a rapid decline in PSTN NMS revenue, at a –14.9% CAGR, as CSPs shift spending to IP-based networks and retire their PSTN equipment.

This report provides a five-year forecast for revenue in the NMS market, split into four telecoms service categories. It views the market from the perspective of CSPs as well as network equipment manufacturers (NEMs), and considers the NEMs' capabilities that will help operators realise the potential of new technologies and, consequently, build new revenue streams. The report also examines user behaviour and its impact on the market.
