Global Multilayered Ceramic Chip Capacitor Market 2009 2013
Infiniti Research Limited, July 2010, Pages: 28
Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitors (MLCCs) are small size ceramic capacitors that are mainly used to filter ripple voltages. These electronic components have low impedance and are highly reliable. These MLCC components are composed of alternating layers of dielectric material and inner electrodes. Ceramic Capacitors do not have any polarity, and the dielectric medium is made of materials such as titanium acid barium. When a potential difference is applied between the two electrodes in a ceramic capacitor, it gets charged. However, once fully charged, it blocks the flow of current. Thus, capacitors are used as filters to block DC (Direct Current) and allow the passage of AC (Alternating Current) through them. A Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor (MLCC) is composed of alternating layers of dielectric material (ceramic in case of MLCC) present between two sets of internal electrodes (placed alternately in the capacitor body) and the terminal electrodes.
MLCCs offer high capacitance values owing to their multilayer structure. Thus, these are used for products with digital circuits requiring capacitance of more than 10 microFarad. In China, where ceramic capacitors account for more than 50 percent of the market, vendors have designed 3 micrometer thick MLCCs with 500 layers of dielectric material. On the other hand, Japanese MLCC manufacturers have developed one micrometer thick MLCCs with almost 1,000 dielectric layers which has even better capacitance per unit volume. Thus, with developing technology, the MLCC market is witnessing an increased capacitance per unit volume, which has made these capacitors suitable for a wide range of electronic devices and product applications. This has been a major driver for the Global MLCC market.
MLCCs are nowadays designed to work in harsh environments (like those present in racing cars), where they are required to maintain their ripple performance in high temperatures. For instance, Formula 1 cars have adopted KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) developed by Magneti Marelli. This is a small sized, light weight, additional power generating system that was attached to the racing cars in the 2009 Formula 1 season. This system uses MLCCs to store energy that is generally wasted during heavy braking in the Formula 1 racing cars. This energy is then used to provide extra power for overtaking during a race.
