Since 1973, nuclear energy has been a national strategic priority in Japan, as the nation is heavily dependent on imported fuel, with fuel imports accounting for 61% of energy production. However, the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster was one of the biggest nuclear disasters in recent years. Rated right next to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the Fukushima nuclear disaster has raised many questions regarding the safety of nuclear power and about the continued usage of nuclear power in the face of such disasters.
