The China Bank Lending Survey - Issue 3 2010
Pacific Epoch, March 2010, Pages: 6
Contacts at 100 city commercial banks we spoke to expect overall March lending to be higher than February, but well down on January. Although new loan growth cooled to RMB 700.1 billion in February following January’s 1.39 trillion lending blitz, new loans issued during the first two months of the year nevertheless accounted for 28% of the annual RMB 7.5 trillion target set by the government. With CPI hitting a 16-month high in February, investors remain concerned about the likelihood of further credit tightening, in spite of the government’s repeated commitment to maintain its “moderately loose monetary policy.”
In order to gain insight into bank lending, structure and direction so far this month, we spoke to contacts at 100 city level commercial banks in nine provinces across north, east and central China. City commercial banks tend to lend more to the private sector and to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
