The China Middle Class Consumer Survey 2010
Pacific Epoch, Feb 2010, Pages: 6
Over Chinese New Year, a holiday during which the overwhelming number of Chinese people return home to spend time with their families, the Pacific Epoch staff in Shanghai was tasked with canvassing family, friends and members of the public to get an on-the-ground sense of consumer confidence across different regions of the country.
In particular, the survey administered was aimed at gauging views on the current state of the economy in their city or region, as well as on the housing market, inflation and income levels. In total, Pacific Epoch surveyed 190 consumers across 12 provinces. The respondents were aged between 22 and 66, with just over half (52%) working for private-sector companies; 24% worked for state-owned enterprises, while 18% were civil servants. While the sample size is clearly not statistically significant, it nevertheless provides us with an insight into the current state of consumer confidence among a key constituency: the Chinese middle-class.
