Probiotics as a concept first emerged in Japan and quickly spread to the rest of world. There has been spectacular growth in the probiotics market since then and is one of the most prominent success stories in the history of functional foods development worldwide. The Indian probiotics market is however very nascent typically in food & beverage application segments. Despite a small base, the Indian probiotics market for foods & beverages is poised to see high growth fuelled by growing consumer awareness about functional foods & beverages.

The human gut naturally contains large numbers of intestinal microflora, but their composition in terms of types of species and number is subject to change depending on diet consumption, stress, oral antibiotic use, and so on. An imbalance in the gut floral population can lead to numerous health issues, such as indigestion, chronic aches, nausea, and even severe colon dysfunction. Consumption of oral probiotics helps in balancing intestinal microfloral environment, thereby improving digestive health of consumers. Probiotics are also known to improve gut disorders, such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and also irritable bowel syndrome.

Probiotics are, in general, known to be beneficial in promoting a healthy digestion, although the mechanisms remain unclear. Probiotics are known to work by means of a cumulative mechanism and is ideally a combination of activities.
