Last year, construction shrank by 5% in Kazakhstan, by 16% in Russia, and nearly halved in Ukraine. However, in the two former countries construction activity has recently been slowly recovering, with an increasing number of companies announcing that they are resuming projects put on hold after the onset of the crisis. In Ukraine, the downturn in construction lost some momentum in the first quarter of 2010, but the recovery will take more time than in the other two countries. In both Ukraine and Russia, construction activity is to some extent spurred by the preparation for large events, such as Euro 2012, Vladivostok 2012 APEC Summit and Sochi 2014 Olympics, while in Kazakhstan traditionally oil & gas and infrastructure projects account for a large portion of construction.
