Market Overview

The Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply Market’s Revenue Share to Slowly, but Steadily, Increase in the Total Uninterruptible Power Supply Market

The global rotary UPS market accounted for around 4.0 per cent of revenues in the total UPS market in 2008. On the one hand, this share is increasing because of the drivers like low total cost of ownership (TCO) of rotary UPS systems, space-saving features and high energy efficiency. On the other hand, rotary UPS systems continue to face intense competition from static UPS systems, along with the market being highly concentrated with one participant holding nearly 60 per cent of the share. Rotary UPS manufacturers are educating consumers and distributors about the benefits of these systems to promote market penetration and revenue growth. Lower TCO for large-size UPS systems is encouraging the demand for rotary UPS.

“The Euro per kilowatt (KW) price for static UPS systems used in applications consuming large amount of power {greater than 1 megawatt (MW)} is significantly higher than that of rotary UPS systems,” says the analyst of this research. “Additionally, for large power applications, rotary UPS offers better power to floor space ratio and greater system efficiency leads to cost savings too.” Although the capital expenditure (CAPEX) of rotary UPS system is higher than that of static UPS, the lifetime costs are low, making it highly attractive for high-power applications. Moreover, rotary UPS systems do not require additional cooling, making them environment-friendly as well as cost-effective.

However, rotary UPS systems continue to face intense competition from the well-established static UPS systems. There are several participants in the static UPS market offering a variety of systems with a wide range of sizes, from below 5 kilovolt-ampere (kVA) to above 500kVA. “The greatest competition to rotary UPS systems comes from static UPS and unlike rotary UPS systems, static UPS systems are available in a wide range of sizes – from small plug and play systems to large customized solutions up to 800 kVA,” explains the analyst. “Many vendors supply static UPS and hence these systems are well known and in some cases, even considered superior to rotary UPS.” Rotary UPS manufacturers should educate consumers, distributors and contractors about the advantages of rotary UPS over static UPS systems. Moreover, greater marketing as well as product development in the 200kVA-500kVA range would help in increasing the revenue share of the rotary UPS market.
