A flavour of major economic opportunities and risks highlighted in the PhaseZero India report:
- Ford, the American car manufacturer, has upheld its decision to invest $500.0 million in India. The investment is meant to help double production at its plant near Chennai. Ford is set to launch the production of its Figo model as soon as its new integrated engine plant in Chennai is ready.
- The Gujarat government has approved 34 solar power projects in an investment worth $2.4 billion over the next five years, to rank it as the top Indian state for solar energy production. The projects will add 716 MW to the state's electricity grid.
- Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) equity inflows in the country have increased from $5.5 billion in 2005 - 2006 to $27.31 billion in the year 2008 - 2009. Government has put in place an investor-friendly policy on FDI under which FDI up to 100.0 percent is permitted in most sectors, including infrastructure and Research and Development.
- International aid agency, The Global Fund, in December 2009 announced a $128.5 million grant for India to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Of the approved grants, $69.4 million will be provided for expanding care and treatment services for tuberculosis (TB), particularly for multi-drug resistant tuberculosis.
