Plastic Oil Pan Modules Hold Huge Potential for Automotive Under Hood Plastics
The drop in car production in leading automotive markets such as Europe and North America has constrained the market for plastic automotive applications. However, another equally influential trend of light weighting has led to the replacement of metal with plastics, especially in under hood applications. The demand for lighter and more cost-efficient vehicles has boded well for the automotive under hood plastics market, as replacing metals with plastics greatly reduces the overall weight of vehicles. Even though the major under hood components are already being made in plastic, smaller components such as oil pan modules are making the shift from metal to plastic only now, thereby providing growth opportunities in the market.
“German component manufacturer, Mann+Hummel, had come out with the first plastic oil pan module, which weighs about 60 percent of the traditional oil pan and reduces production costs by 20 percent,” says the analyst of this research. “After its release, plastic oil pan modules had been used in German cars such as Volkswagen and BMW and their success caused other global automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to follow suit.”

Very few plastic resin manufacturers have dabbled in product development in the under hood plastics segment of the automotive market.
