MRG Forecasts DOCSIS 3.0 and Cable's Global Migration to IP
A new report measures the growth of DOCSIS 3.0 and Euro-DOCSIS 3.0 that is enabling global Cable Operators (MSOs) worldwide to upgrade to 50-200 Mbps Broadband services, and to take another step toward using all-IP (Internet Protocol) networks. For MSOs, this report addresses key questions:

“Given that an MSO can upgrade some spare channels to DOCSIS 3.0 for about US$60-$160 per home passed,” says Mike Galli, MRG Analyst, “the question remains, ‘What is that cost once the spare channels are used up?’” The report also includes a consumer survey that shows how much more consumers will (or will not) pay for 50-100 Mbps
Broadband service.
While the DOCSIS (Broadband) architecture has performed well for Operators in the past, Version 3.0 is still not seen as the ultimate goal. A new architecture has emerged as a candidate for the latest NGAA (Next Generation Access Architecture) called the CMAP (Converged Multiservice Access Platform) architecture, proposed primarily by Comcast, but having industry-wide support. CMAP’s technology goals are aimed at enabling lower costs, greater flexibility and incorporating a wide range of headend components. Will CMAP delay the roll-out of DOCSIS 3.0 and Euro-DOCSIS 3.0, or simply strengthen Cable's market position?
