'Since the mid-1990s, Spanish economic growth has outperformed the rest of the Eurozone, primarily driven by mass tourism and European subsidies. The economy grew at an average rate of 4% during 1997–2000. The country’s growth slowed somewhat during 2001–03 and it did not exceed 3.5% in any year. The economy registered a CAGR of 3.6% during 2000–06. After attaining a steady growth during 2000–06, the Spanish economy continued to decline in the second half of 2007 and 2008. It attained a growth rate of 1.1% in 2008 compared to 3.7% in 2007. The deceleration in 2008 came about as a result of the sharp slowdown in national demand. National domestic demand posted an average rate of increase of 0.4% in 2008, compared with 4.2% in 2007. This was due to weak consumption and investment expenditure. The downward trend continued in 2009 and the economy shrank by 3.7%.'
