'Germany was in a far better position than expected in 2010 as it belied the gloomy scenario predicted at the beginning of 2009. Although its economy shrank by 4.7% in 2009, it bounced back to register a growth of 3.4% in 2010, mainly due to increasing exports and domestic demand. However, inflation has been on the rise after it fell to 0.2% in 2009. It grew to 1.1% in 2010 and in January and February 2011, the higher cost of food and energy accelerated inflation to 2.0% and 2.2%, respectively. This was the fastest growth in more than two years, according to the German Federal Statistical Office.'
