The U.S. appliance industry has shown strong signs of recovery in recent months and appliance factory unit shipments are up for the year, particularly in major appliance categories. This increase is primarily attributed to the Home Buyer Tax Credit and Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate program.

Despite a positive start to the year, appliance manufacturers remain uncertain regarding the economic climate. Many are concerned that the expiration of the tax credit and rebate programs will impact the strong unit shipments the industry has realized since inception of the programs.

One area that home appliance manufacturers have identified for continued growth potential is Energy Star© appliances. Sears has launched a promotion called ''The Big Switch,'' which is designed to encourage consumers to switch to Energy Star© appliances. Sears' goal is to replace 5 million appliances with new, more energy efficient models.

Technological development and price declines continue to foster global growth in consumer electronics, particularly in video electronics. While the U.S. currently drives the global consumer electronics industry, the growth pattern is expected to change as demand from developing nations rises, most notably in the Asia-Pacific region.
