U.S. Appliance Industry Statistical Review 2010
UBM Canon, July 2010, Pages: 11
The appliance industry was hit especially hard during the past two years by the economic crisis due in part to its dependence on the U.S. housing market. Signs of recovery were evident by the end of 2009, with shipments of units in the six major appliance categories realizing growth from September 2009 through mid-2010.
In response to consumers spending more time at home in an effort to spend less money, appliance marketers have successfully featured small home appliances, such as slow cookers, to help people live within their means while enjoying more leisure time at home.
Recognizing consumers' increasing interest in energy-efficient appliances and the perceived money savings, appliance manufacturers have increased production of products that meet U.S. government criteria for ENERGY STAR® certification. Thinking several years ahead, some leading manufacturers are strategically developing appliances that are smart-grid compatible. In April 2009, Whirlpool Corp. announced its intention to make all electronically controlled appliances it produces capable of receiving and responding to smart-grid signals. GE has also undertaken an initiative to develop smart appliances that are grid-enabled or have demand/response capabilities.
By the end of 2009, consumer confidence had improved. Spurred by the U.S. housing market stimulus efforts, home sales were up 4.9% over 2008 – the first annual sales gain since 2005. The appliance industry started to show signs of increasing production to meet the higher levels of demand. In October and November of 2009, Sub-Zero/Wolf added a second production shift at two factories, called back more than 200 hourly employees, and hired additional staff. In December 2009, Whirlpool purchased freezer maker W.C. Wood and resumed production at the plant. The company also called back 400 laid-off workers.
While recovery seems to be a reality for the industry, appliance makers are aware of their fragile position and are focusing efforts on strategies to strengthen their position. Continued relief is dependent upon further improvement of the economy and the housing sector as well as market insight and the ability to quickly adapt.
