Summary: |
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in the US, as in most developed countries. Although great progress has been made in reducing cardiovascular mortality in recent decades, the burden of CVD is expected to increase in the immediate future, as the population ages.
Increasingly, attention will shift from acute coronary care toward therapies that prevent or delay disease onset, improve the quality of life for afflicted individuals, and prolong life expectancy. |
