Alabama Power Company (Alabama Power) is an electric utility company engaged in generation, transmission and distribution of power. It also purchases electricity and distributes to its customers. The company also owns coal reserves near its Plant Gorgas and utilizes its output in its generating plants. It has a total nameplate capacity of 12,222 MW. The company distributes electricity through 10,488 miles of transmission lines and 81,497 miles of distribution lines. Alabama Power generates electricity from coal, hydro, natural gas, oil and nuclear sources. The company provides electricity to more than 650 communities which includes Anniston, Birmingham, Gadsden, Mobile, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa, as well as across rural areas, and at wholesale to 15 municipally-owned electric distribution systems, of which 11 are served indirectly through sales to AMEA, and two rural distributing cooperative associations. Alabama Power sells electricity to 1,439,016 customers that includes 1,235,128 residential, 197,336 commercial, 5,770 industrial, and 782 other customers. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Southern Company. It is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, the US.
