Market Definition
The department stores sector consists of the total revenues generated through the sale of retail goods through department stores, valued at retail selling price, with any currency conversions calculated using constant annual 2009 average exchange rates. For the purposes of this profile, the department store is defined as a large scale retail outlet, often on many floors, offering a number of different product categories, of which more than 20% of sales should be in each of at least two separate departments (such as clothing and homewares) but less than 70% in any one sector. Outlets such as mainstream general merchandise retailers and discount department stores, covered by the General Merchandise Stores profile, are therefore excluded.
For the purposes of this report, Europe consists of Western Europe and Eastern Europe.
Western Europe comprises Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
Eastern Europe comprises the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Ukraine.
