Cloud Computing End-user Analysis - Colombia
Frost & Sullivan, Aug 2010, Pages: 35
Most of the major factors driving adoption of the Cloud Computing concept by companies in Colombia are the same ones that boost more mature markets such as the USA and Western Europe. Fortunately for the Latin American and Caribbean region, countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Chile were not so effected by the economic crisis as some other economies, prompting initial Cloud Computing investments already in 2009. The implicit cost reduction that the Cloud Computing pricing model suggests is seen by both CIOs and CFOs as one of the strongest drivers in the Latin American and Caribbean region. The decision to explore Cloud and other hosted options is primarily driven by economics

Market Overview
Cost Savings and Operational Elasticity to Boost the Cloud Computing Market in Columbia
Cloud computing is a flexible and scalable shared and/or private environment in which third-party suppliers or in-house architectures use virtualization technologies to create and distribute computing resources to customers on a need basis, through the Internet browser. Majority of large enterprises in Colombia are aware of the benefits and drivers of this emerging technology. Cost savings and operational elasticity are the main market drivers, followed by business continuity. “As with several other industry-transforming technologies, adoption of cloud computing is a bottom-up phenomenon, driven into the enterprise sector by consumer behavior and economics,” says the analyst of this research. “While the term cloud computing is relatively recent, the various concepts it encompasses such as shared environment, pay per use, and third-party provider, have been a part of enterprise computing for years.”
Other strong drivers boosting the adoption of cloud computing include ease of use and rapid scalability that the architecture allows; a company can increase and decrease the processing power and storage space in extremely flexible contracts. Though there has been limited adoption of cloud computing in Colombia in 2010, it is expected to witness higher acceptance in 2011 and 2012 with 75 percent of the respondents planning to adopt the technology or extend their existing contracts. The main verticals that intend to implement cloud computing are government, telecommunications, and manufacturing.
However, despite the high level of awareness about cloud computing, its current adoption level is low in Colombia. Furthermore, lack of knowledge about services that can be leveraged under the cloud computing model is likely to be the main market restraint in 2010. “Despite the general knowledge on cloud computing, IT professionals are continue to be unaware of all the services offered by IT providers under the cloud environment,” explains the analyst. “Furthermore, many companies are still uncertain on how to utilize cloud computing in the best possible manner.” It is important for cloud computing providers to leverage their offers and work closely with enterprises to increase their awareness about the technology and its benefits. “IT and telecom service providers that develop a strong communication strategy, with a focus on pricing, security, and market experience, are likely to gain significant market share in the cloud computing market,” concludes the analyst.
