Overview

As environmental concerns increase, companies are looking beyond their internal operations to improve the environmental profile of their products—from their origins in raw inputs through their lifetimes in use by customers. Nowhere is this more essential than for companies in the business of selling ‘green’ products. Understanding and mitigating life cycle impacts is critical for risk mitigation, and as an opportunity for competitive differentiation.

In this online conference recording, two leading practitioners present strategies and methods to trace a product’s environmental effects across its life cycle and how to use the resulting information to focus product development and marketing strategy.

Speakers
Don Bray, President of AltaTerra Research, moderates the session and provides an introduction to life cycle analysis (LCA) in shaping product strategy, including: an overview and definition of LCA, value of LCA, origins of LCA, phases of analysis, and basic methods.

Corinne Reich-Weiser, PhD, deepens the discussion of LCA methodologies and reviews a case study of a solar concentrator company.

Focusing on LCA in the dynamic field of solar electric systems, Vasilis Fthenakis, PhD, examines the latest life cycle insights and modeling processes for solar electric products, including single-crystal silicon, multicrystalline silicon, ribbon silicon, and thin-film solar cells.

Key Questions

- What is environmental product life cycle assessment? How does it work?
- What is the business value of green product LCA? What kinds of business advantage does it create?
- What are the challenges in conducting and implementing the findings of environmental product LCA?

About the presenters
Corinne Reich-Weiser is an expert on business appropriate life cycle assessment methodologies and Director of Climate Services at Climate Earth, Inc. Ms. Reich-Weiser is a mechanical engineer who holds a doctorate from UC Berkeley, where she was a member of the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Sustainability. Her specialty is supply chain decision- making to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Corinne has published extensively in her specialty, including Greenhouse Gas Return on Investment: A New Metric for Energy Technology; Supply Chain Optimization and Planning for the Environment (SCOPE) Tool; and Greenhouse Gas Calculator for Consumer Goods: A Case Study of the VW Golf.

Vasilis Fthenakis is founder and director of Columbia’s Center for Life Cycle Analysis (CLCA). Research by Professor Fthenakis at CLCA and at Brookhaven National Laboratories, where he has led the National PV Environmental Research Center since 1982, is analyzing various photovoltaic technologies to show which are most environmentally friendly over their lifetimes. He and his team have developed environmental models based on information from more than a dozen major solar companies making single-crystal silicon, multicrystalline silicon, ribbon silicon, and thin-film solar cells, all of which have different efficiencies in converting sunlight into electricity. Professor Fthenakis is author of numerous publications, including a lead article in Scientific American on the potential for a massive contribution of solar power to energy supplies. His research has been covered in The New York Times, IEEE Spectrum, Spiegeland and other European press.

Don Bray is co-founder and President of AltaTerra Research. He has led a broad range of market research and consulting engagements in corporate sustainability, green IT, carbon management and renewable energy systems. Don is a frequent author, speaker, and discussion moderator on emerging solutions for energy efficiency and corporate sustainability. Prior to AltaTerra, he served as a managing partner for Accenture. Don is actively involved in energy and environment related initiatives with the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, a major nonprofit trade organization, and SolarTech, an industry consortium focused on streamlining implementation and reducing costs in the solar value chain. He earned his Masters in Engineering Management from Stanford University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California at Davis.
